The unique curb appeal of Sod Houses stands out against rolling prairie hills from South Dakota to Iceland. As the first homes of America’s pioneers, sod homes are earth structures made from sod (stripped soil with prairie grass). Wood is scarce on the prairie, so pioneers were smart with their resources while building shelter from the land. Sod homes still exist today, although they’ve been modernized with running water and sometimes trendy home decor. While there’s not a large market of sod homes in the United States, they are scattered throughout the midwest, with a small community of them in Minnesota.
